Unlike most card games, poker does not require the player to bet directly into the pot. However, there are times when players are required to place a predetermined amount of chips into the pot before the cards are dealt. This is called an ante.

One of the most popular variants of the game is the seven-card stud. The stud version of the poker game allows each player to receive an extra card, giving him or her the best five-card hand possible.
